Bull, a big mastiff dog, has been separated from his master, the mountain man Grit. Dognapped and taken to St. Louis, the dog is put into a pit at a local tavern to serve as a battling dog, fighting bears for an audience of gamblers who bet on the outcome.

Bull kills one of his human jailors and flees. He is free but turned out into the wild. Bull must get back to his kindly owner, Grit, in the Rocky Mountain Country. Along the way he escapes human pursuers and fights animals that come at him—the wolverine, the badger, the mountain lion and the wolf.

After eating rancid meat, Bull goes blind. But he is befriended by a wandering goat, who like Bull is a refugee. The two unlikely friends band together as a team, the goat serving as Bull’s eyes, a seeing-eye goat, guiding the dog into….
the unknown.

It’s a story of bad and good men, of two domesticated animals hoping for a decent human owner, and a struggle to survive in the wild.
